Crafted Timber Frames in Oak, Douglas Fir & Larch

A well-designed timber framed building combines structure, proportion, and material to create spaces of lasting quality. Whether an extension or a complete house, an oak timber frame offers strength, longevity, and a quiet architectural presence that improves with age.

In extension projects, a timber frame allows new space to be added with clarity of structure, particularly where light, openness and generous spans are important. When considered early, the frame can be developed to integrate properly with the existing building, resulting in work that feels settled and coherent rather than applied.

You can see examples of how this translates into built form across our Oak frame projects.

At WoodWorks, our frames are carefully designed and traditionally jointed, informed by experience and a deep understanding of timber as a structural material.

You can read more about our process, from early design through workshop manufacture and on-site assembly.

We enjoy what we do. We take pride in our work — and that care shows in the buildings we produce.

Read Our Complete Guide to Timber Framing in Scotland

Choosing a structural timber frame - whether Oak or another heavy timber system - is a significant decision.

To help homeowners make informed choices, we've written an in-depth guide covering timber framing in Scotland, including Oak frames, costs, planning considerations, and alternative structural options.

If you're still in the early stages, this guide is designed to give clarity before any commitments are made.

No sales emails. No obligation. Just a practical resource.

Our primary framing material is Oak, sourced from sustainable and well-managed forests. Oak is exceptionally strong and durable, making it ideally suited to structural timber framing, while its grain, medullary rays, and natural figuring give each frame a distinct character that will be appreciated for generations.

Timbers can be finished in the workshop to suit the character of the building. Some clients prefer a clean, planed finish with crisp edges, while others favour brushed timbers that introduce greater texture. Leaving subtle bandsaw marks is another option, retaining part of the timber’s story from tree to structure. Where appropriate, additional finishes can be applied to the timbers when it supports the overall aesthetic and architectural intent of the project.

Each approach works well, and we encourage clients to visit the workshop to see samples and discuss what best suits their project. Oak’s warmth and character remain a firm favourite for timber-framed buildings.

This hands-on approach forms part of how we work and is reflected throughout our process.

Alongside Oak, we also work with Douglas Fir and Larch to create structural timber frames for a range of architectural settings. Their colour and grain lend themselves particularly well to contemporary designs, especially when combined with planed finishes and carefully detailed steel elements.

Material choice is always made in the context of the building as a whole, resulting in a coherent and considered structure.

Whatever stage you are at with your project, we are always happy to discuss ideas and offer clear, honest guidance.
