OUR STORY

We design and build oak timber frames across Scotland.

We are craftspeople focused on creating beautifully made buildings,

carefully planned, and built to last for generations.

From simple structures to more complex timber frames, we bring the experience

and judgement needed to guide projects from early ideas through to completion.

WHAT WE DO

At WoodWorks, we design and build timber-framed buildings, working primarily in Oak and other structural timbers. Our work ranges from modest extensions and garden structures through to larger residential and commercial buildings, all built using the same careful approach.

We are involved throughout the timber frame process — from early design development, through workshop fabrication and on-site assembly — taking responsibility for how each structure is conceived, made, and put together.

Our roots are in traditional timber framing, including scribe-rule techniques, which continue to inform the way we work today. These methods demand accuracy, patience, and judgement, and remain central to how we build durable, coherent timber structures.

HOW WE WORK

Our approach is rooted in careful planning and a clear understanding of how timber structures are assembled and perform over time. From the earliest stages, we consider proportion, jointing, and build sequence, ensuring decisions made at the outset are carried through the entire project.

A detailed understanding of the timber we use and the joints we design allows us to resolve challenges early and build with confidence. Each frame is set out accurately, made with care, and assembled methodically, maintaining consistency from workshop to site.

From timber selection through to glazing and finishes, our focus remains on delivering well-made structures where attention to detail is inherent in the process, not added at the end.

WORKING TOGETHER

We recognise that every project is different, and we work closely with clients, architects, and engineers to ensure the timber structure is resolved clearly and appropriately from the outset.

We value early involvement, where ideas can be tested, structure can be refined, and material choices can be made with confidence. Whether projects are at concept stage or more fully developed, we offer clear, honest guidance throughout the process.

Our work is carried out across Scotland, and we take a collaborative, considered approach to every project we are involved in.

WHO WE ARE

We are a profit-sharing business, and the quality of our work relies on the skill, care, and collaboration of the people involved in every project. Timber framing at this level depends on shared responsibility and trust, and we value the contribution each person brings to the workshop and the site.

We work to clear internal standards — if something would not be acceptable in our own homes, it is not acceptable in a client’s building. That approach shapes how we make decisions, how we work together, and the level of care taken throughout a project.

Each person involved brings their own experience, skills, and judgement, allowing us to approach timber buildings with confidence and consistency from design through to completion.

We are members of the Scottish Ecological Design Association, and take a considered approach to material choice, sourcing, and long-term performance. Where appropriate, we work with sustainable and responsibly managed timbers, balancing environmental responsibility with durability and structural integrity.

We are also members of the Carpenters Fellowship, through which we continue to learn, share knowledge, and engage with other timber framers across the UK. This ongoing exchange helps us refine our practice and contribute to a wider body of knowledge used by architects, specifiers, carpenters, and clients.

"WoodWorks have skilled craftsmen who are hardworking and pay close attention to detail, which shows in the end result. They are reliable, pleasant to deal with and are good at communicating during the build process. They managed the construction well and the building they produced is excellent."

Norena Macadam, Pearsie

We work with clients at many stages of a project, from first ideas through to developed designs, offering clear, practical guidance as proposals take shape.

Our work is based in Oak, Douglas Fir, and Larch, using traditional jointing alongside contemporary detailing where appropriate. Frames are designed and made in our workshops near Kirriemuir, Angus, before being assembled on site across Scotland.
